Brookside Garden Center Has Pledged $5,000 in Services to the Tolland 300th Anniversary Celebration

brooksideBrookside Garden Center has become the latest major donor to support this year’s Tolland 300th Anniversary celebration.

The center has pledged $5,000 in landscaping services to the anniversary committee to beautify the town-owned land where the Tolland Founders Monument will be dedicated on June 13. The pledge makes the garden center the fifth “Settlers Rock” level sponsor of this year’s anniversary events. Donors to the anniversary effort are listed at tolland300.org.

The company will be represented by owners Jeff Ruest and Joe Matteis when it is honored by the town council, the 300th Anniversary Committee, and its partner, the Tolland Historical Society, on April 28 at 7:30 P.M. in council chambers at town hall.

The large granite monument, produced by Rockville Monuments, is being installed on town-owned land at the corner of Dunn Hill and Old Stafford roads. It will honor the 59 pioneers who, on May 9, 1713, first asked the Connecticut Colony to make Tolland its own town. They were granted the charter on May 12, 1715. It will be dedicated at 1 P.M. on June 13 in a ceremony that is open to the public.

Founded in 2014, Brookside Garden Center is a full-service garden center that provides everything from plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers. The business also offers full landscaping services, from hardscapes and excavation to full property maintenance and mowing.

“We were both raised in Tolland. It is a great place to live and work,” Ruest said. “This is our way to give a little back to our community and celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Town of Tolland.

Celeste Senechal, chairwoman of the anniversary committee, said she is grateful to the company for its support.

“Thank you very much to Brookside Garden Center for helping us create an inviting, small park where Tolland residents will be able to visit the Founders Monument for years to come,” she said.

The anniversary committee, historical society, and many civic groups will be holding dozens of events to mark the anniversary this year. They include a Charter Day celebration for schoolchildren on the Tolland Green May 12, a gala on May 16, and a tour of historic homes and museums on the green June 7. The Tolland Founders Monument will be dedicated June 13, and a large regional parade and townwide picnic will end the celebration on Sept. 19.

Businesses and residents can still donate to support the celebration. Opportunities include being a member of the “Tolland 300 Club” by making a $300 donation. Checks should be made out to the Town of Tolland, with “300th anniversary committee” in the memo line. Donations can be mailed to the Tolland 300th Anniversary Committee, Town Hall, 21 Tolland Green, Tolland, CT 06084.
