Celebrate Tolland’s 300th the easy way on Sept. 19: take the bus!

Tolland will mark its 300th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 19 with a major celebration, and the best way to get around that day will be by using the convenient, free shuttle buses.

The Tolland 300th Anniversary Committee and its partner, the Tolland Historical Society, are holding a large, regional parade at 1 P.M., followed by a festive picnic, combined with the annual Celebrate Tolland event, from 3 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Tolland Middle School. The parade is sponsored by Banner Water, and the main sponsor of the picnic is the family of Eric and Lois Santini.

The parade steps off from Tolland Intermediate School, turns left onto the green by town hall, and traverses the green to its northern point. It ends at Dunn Hill and Old Stafford Road at the site of the new Tolland Founders Monument.

Parking will be extremely limited around the town green before and during the parade, so paradegoers are encouraged to take one of the buses to the green between 11 A.M. and 12:45 P.M. from Tolland High School, the Route 195 commuter lot, or Crandall Park. Overflow parking will be available at Tolland Baptist Church, and people who park there can also catch a free shuttle bus. The resident state trooper’s office advises that any cars parked along the parade route after 11:30 A.M. on Sept. 19 will be subject to towing.

After the parade, from 2:30 P.M. to 4 P.M., the buses will start at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church on Tolland Green and will transport people back to the southern portion of the green, to the commuter lot, Crandall Park, the Baptist Church, Tolland Middle School, and Tolland High School.

From 3 P.M. to 8:30 P.M., buses will make a continuous loop between the middle school, the high school, the commuter lot, and the Crandall Park/Baptist Church lots.

Make a day of it, and leave your car at the commuter lot or the high school and you won’t have any parking worries.

The Tolland Farmers Market will also take place from 9 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. on the green Sept. 19. The Arts of Tolland will hold its annual crafts show from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. in the Arts Center the same day, and the Tolland Lions Club will sell refreshments on the green from 11:30 A.M. until the end of the parade.
