Big Y Foods Inc. Lends Its Support to the Tolland 300th Anniversary Celebration

TOLLAND – Big Y Foods Inc., which will mark its 10th anniversary of operating a supermarket in Tolland in August, has become the latest major donor to support this year’s Tolland 300th Anniversary celebration.

The family-owned chain based in Springfield, Mass. recently made a $1,000 donation to the anniversary committee, making it the sixth “Crandall” level sponsor of the celebration. Donors are listed at Tolland300.org.

BigYFoodsLogoBig Y, represented by store director Scott Gardiner and District Manager Michael Beaudry, will be honored by the town council, the anniversary committee, and its partner, the Tolland Historical Society, on Jan. 27 at 7:30 P.M. in council chambers at town hall.

During the past few months, Big Y sold copies of a new history of Tolland, “The Tolland Transformation: 1940–2014” by Marshall A. Atwater, to support the Historical Society. Gardiner said Big Y was pleased to make the books available to its customers and to support the anniversary celebration.

“Congratulations to the town and its founding fathers on the 300th anniversary celebration,’’ Gardiner said. “Each day, we witness the true sense of Tolland as a community and how proud our customers are to live in this area. Big Y has a continued effort in community involvement.”

Gardiner noted that the 59,108-square-foot Big Y opened in Fieldstone Commons on Aug. 5, 2005.

Celeste Senechal, chairwoman of the 300th anniversary committee, thanked Big Y for its generous donation.

“Congratulations to Big Y as it gets ready to celebrate its 10th anniversary in Tolland,” she said. “We are grateful that the store sold the new history book and that its leaders have signed on as a Tolland 300th sponsor.”

The anniversary committee, historical society, and many civic groups will be holding dozens of events to mark the anniversary this year. They include a Charter Day celebration for schoolchildren on the Tolland Green May 12, a gala on May 16, and a tour of historic homes and museums on the green June 7. A Founders Monument will be dedicated June 13, and a large regional parade and townwide picnic will end the celebration on Sept. 19. To see the complete list of events, visit Tolland300.org.

Businesses and resident can still make donations to support this year’s celebration. Opportunities include being a member of the “Tolland 300 Club” by making a $300 donation.

Checks should be made out to the Town of Tolland, with “300th anniversary committee” in the memo line. Donations can be mailed to the Tolland 300th Anniversary Committee, Town Hall, 21 Tolland Green, Tolland, CT 06084.
